Study finds black players trail whites in graduation rates among elite college football teams
ORLANDO, Fla. The nation's elite college football players are doing better when it comes to getting a diploma. But a new study is raising questions about graduation rates among blacks. The review was done by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida. It focused on 56 schools headed for college bowl games.
Overall, graduation rates are up. But study author Richard Lapchick says that when it comes to black athletes, graduation rates still lag those of whites. And he says the gap is widening.
The schools with the worst graduation rates overall, as well as those rates for black players, were the University of Pittsburgh, University of Texas at El Paso and Texas.
The best graduation rates for all football players and black players were at Notre Dame, Boston College and Syracuse.
