Cheney thanks U-S troops in Afghanistan; say terrors still a threat
BAGRAM, Afghanistan Vice President Dick Cheney is congratulating U-S troops in Afghanistan, telling them their hard work has finally given the besieged country hope for its future. Cheney says for the first time the people of Afghanistan "are looking confident about the future of freedom and peace." He spoke to soldiers this morning at Bagram Air Base, just hours before a ceremony to inaugurate the country's first democratically elected president.
The vice president said that -- thanks to U-S forces -- the Taliban dictatorship that harbored the "most vicious terrorist network in history is now history."
But Cheney said work remains to be done. He said terrorists are still trying to make inroads in Afghanistan -- and it's up to U-S troops "to make those enemies miserable."
