Russian president doubtful about conditions for Iraqi elections
MOSCOW Russia's president is expressing doubt about whether Iraqi elections can be held under current conditions. Vladimir Putin met today with Iraq's interim prime minister. In televised remarks, Putin said that, "honestly speaking," he couldn't imagine how next month's elections could be organized during Iraq's "occupation by foreign forces."
Putin's remarks follows angry words in recent days -- apparently directed at Western countries criticizing the Ukraine elections. The candidate supported by Putin saw his victory overturned amid allegations of fraud.
The Iraqi interim government -- and Bush administration -- have said Iraq's elections will go forward as planned on January 30th.
