Fund formed to pay heating bills of poor residents
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Rising energy costs have sparked the creation of a new fund that helps low income residents get their heat restored when it is shut off because of unpaid bills.

The Heating Assistance Fund is the brainchild of several community groups and Governor Carcieri. The goal is to make sure low income residents are provided heat and hot water during the cold winter months.

Utility companies say there could be up to 400 homes that do not have electricity or gas service this winter.

The committee maintaining the fund includes representatives from United Way, the Rhode Island Foundation and the Public Utilities Commission, among others.
