Champs receive another honor
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

BOSTON (AP) -- The World Series champion Boston Red Sox celebrated their selection as Sports Illustrated Sportsmen of the Year today, even as management worked on building next years team.

Five weeks after the Red Sox swept Saint Louis for the franchises first championship in 86 years, the magazine staged a party in their honor at a nightclub across the street from Fenway Park.

General manager Theo Epstein is trying to put together a roster that can win another World Series.

The Red Sox are negotiating with pitcher Pedro Martinez and catcher Jason Varitek, their two top free agents. The team started the offseason with a major-league high of 16 free agents before outfielder Gabe Kapler signed with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan and backup catcher Doug Mirabelli re-signed with Boston.

Red Sox officials have remained tightlipped about their negotiations.
