Bush set to name Kerik to homeland post
WHITE HOUSE (AP) -- President Bush today is set to name a second-term homeland security secretary who knows all to well the cost of terrorism.
Officials say his choice is Bernard Kerik, who was
New Yorks police commissioner on the day hijackers flew airplanes into the World Trade Center. Twenty-three of Keriks officers perished when the twin towers fell.
Since leaving the force, Kerik has served on the Nine-Elevencommission, helped train police in Iraq and campaigned for Bushs re-election.
The announcement is coming a day after Bush tapped Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns to be his new agriculture secretary and U-N ambassador John Danforth tendered his resignation.
Danforth has only been U-N envoy since June. But he was passed over when Bush named Condoleezza Rice to succeed Colin Powell as secretary of state. Officials say the 68-year-old former senator has decided to retire.
