COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) -- The World Series champion Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers will play in the 59th annual Hall of Fame game.

The game at historic Doubleday Field is scheduled for May 23rd, the earliest date in history. It also marks the third straight year the game will be held separately from the annual induction ceremony, which takes place in August.

Both teams will be making their seventh appearance. It will mark the fourth time a defending World Series champion appears in the contest and the first since 1986, when the Kansas City Royals faced the Texas Rangers.

The game has traditionally featured a team from each league, but in 2005 it will have teams from the same league for only the fourth time in history.
