Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

BOSTON (AP) -- The Red Sox and backup catcher Doug Mirabelli have agreed on a new two-year contract.

Mirabelli becomes the first of the World Series championsÔŅĹ 16 free agents to re-sign.

General manager Theo Epstein confirmed the agreement but would not disclose the terms. A source speaking on the condition of anonymity says Mirabelli will earn a 200-thousand dollar signing bonus and one-point-four (m) million dollars in each of the next two seasons.

Mirabelli made 825-thousand dollars last season. He batted .281 with nine homers and 32 R-B-IÔŅĹs in 160 at-bats as Jason VaritekÔŅĹs backup. Mirabelli was the regular catcher for knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.
