Annual ranking of 'most dangerous' cities
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

TRENTON, N.J. Camden, New Jersey, has become the nation's most-dangerous city, according to a Kansas company's yearly ranking based on crime statistics.

Camden has overtaken Detroit, which fell to second in this year's list. Camden area officials downplay the designation, saying many steps have already been taken to reduce crime in the city. Camden was number three on the list last year.

Atlanta, St. Louis and Gary, Indiana, rounded out the top five in the rankings by Morgan Quitno. The company publishes "City Crime Rankings," an annual reference book.

Newton, Massachusetts, ranked as the safest city. Amherst, New York, which had been safest for the past four years, fell to third safest.

The rankings look at the rate for six crime categories: Murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and auto theft.
