Catchers agent seeking 5-year deal with no-trade clause

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) -- The Red Sox could have difficulty keeping Jason Varitek in the fold.

The catchers agent, Scott Boras, says he plans to seek a five-year deal for his client, which could be in the range of 50 (m) million dollars. Boras also wants a no-trade clause for the 32-year-old Varitek, one of several Red Sox stars who will become free agents at midnight tomorrow.

Current Red Sox management has a policy of avoiding contracts longer than four years. A full no-trade provision would also violate club policy and trigger a no-trade clause in the contract of outfielder Manny Ramirez.

Boras says he expects Varitek to be compensated at the level of the top catchers in baseball.
