Three-time Cy Young winner files for free agency
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

BOSTON (AP)-- Pedro Martinez has filed for free agency, one week after his Game Three victory helped set up the Red Sox first World Series title since 1918.

Martinez just completed a five-year, 90 (m) million dollar contract. The Red Sox have exclusive negotiating rights with him until November eleventh, when other teams can make an offer for the three-time Cy Young winner.

Martinez joins several other members of the world championship team who have filed for free agency, including pitcher Derek Lowe, catcher Jason Varitek and shortstop Orlando Cabrera.

After his World Series start, Martinez said his heart was in Boston, and that he hoped he would get a chance to return to the team. But he also said he understood the business part of baseball.
