Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

A sampling of what Rhode Island voters said about the presidential contest between President Bush and his Democratic rival Sen. John Kerry on Tuesday.

Hes holding back science. Hes holding back the 21st century, cures that can help people.Independent Steve Torres, 42, of Portsmouth, saying he disagrees with Bushs opposition to government funding for stem cell research.

   ------

Hes the right man for the job. Hes up front ... and his wife, she tells it like it is.Eva Massie, 74, of Warwick, on why she voted for Kerry.

   ------

I think Americans like someone who has a core set of beliefs.

We may not agree all the time, but we want to know where he stands.  Kerrys too much of an opportunist, a political opportunist. I dont want our country governed by popularity polls.State Republican Party chairwoman Patricia Morgan, who is also running for a seat in the state House.

   ------

Kerry is too much of a radical for me.Saleh Shahid, a 37-year-old Warwick physician and registered Republican.

   ------

I think the countrys going down the wrong road in Bush and (Vice President Dick) Cheneys hands. Im hoping we can redirect and get back on track.Richard Short, 53, of Providence.

   ------

George W. Bush was elected as a compassionate conservative and he has been unwilling or unable to come to the center, work with others or be compassionate.Rhode Island Democratic House Majority Leader Gordon Fox.

   ------

I think that President Bush has been one of the worst things to happen to this country since Nixon.Roxanne Murray, a 48-year-old Providence attorney, on why she voted for Kerry.
