Voters line up to cast ballots
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Islanders were lining up at polls statewide today to cast ballots for president, Congress and other races. They were also deciding 14 ballot questions.
In some polling places in Newport and Middletown, voters were waiting up to an hour for their chance to cast a ballot. In Providence, some lines stretched out the door of polling places and onto sidewalks.
Many voters said they went to the polls because of the tight national contest between President Bush and Senator John Kerry. They also cited patriotism and a sense of duty.
Richard Short, from Providence, says he voted because, (quote) �I think the country�s going down the wrong road in Bush and Cheney�s hands.�
Providence resident Andrew Chin says it�s important to show politicians you care enough to vote. (Quote) �People could feel impotent�or even disenfranchised because the campaign hasn�t really been here�but instead, we�re coming out to vote.�
