Elections officials predict strong voter turnout today
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Elections officials in Rhode Island are expecting a strong voter turnout today, as passions are fanned by the tight presidential race.
The state Board of Elections estimates 70 percent of eligible voters will vote. That would be the largest turnout since 1964.
Polls are open from 7 a-m to 9 p-m.
There are about 680-thousand eligible voters in Rhode Island.
About 412-thousand, or 61 percent, voted in the 2000 election, according to the secretary of state�s office.
Officials say votes will be counted at the elections board, and announced there. Results will then be posted on municipal Web sites. An estimated 13-thousand mail ballots will be counted once polls close, and a few hundred provisional ballots during the day.
Write-in ballots, such as those possibly affecting the mayoral race in Cumberland, likely won�t be fully counted today.
