Crayola comes up with N.C. color
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

RALEIGH, N.C. There won't be a Carolina Blue or Wolfpack Red for the North Carolina state color in the newest box of Crayola crayons.

But for East Carolina fans, maybe it's close enough. The winner is called Grape Hatteras.

Almost 500 people from North Carolina offered suggestions for the state color. The object was to give one of the 120 colors in the Crayola palette a new name that captures something special about the state.

Judges thought about allowing the state to have the white crayon, with the name First in Flight White. But Washington won that color with Space Needle, after the Seattle landmark.

Finally, Crayola officials were impressed with the ring of Grape Hatteras. It was suggested by Sharon Martin, a teacher's assistant at Grace Christian School in Raleigh.
