American Civil Liberties Union taking early action to ensure fair vote
WASHINGTON The American Civil Liberties Union has been in court in a number of states in the weeks before Election Day, launching challenges to a whole host of practices which it believes could cause problems. Attorney Lashawn Warren says suits have been filed in California, Nevada, Montana and Maryland in an effort to safeguard the integrity of the vote.
Warren says the A-C-L-U plans to send lawyers into the field on election day to look for signs of voter intimidation. That includes excessive police presence outside the polls and overly aggressive efforts to have voters produce identification or proof of citizenship.
Warren also says the A-C-L-U will closely watch the count of provisional ballots -- those cast by people who say they're registered although the election board can't confirm that.
