Florida man charged with driving car at Rep. Katherine Harris
SARASOTA, Fla. A Florida man has been charged with assault after allegedly trying to run down Congresswoman Katherine Harris. The driver of the silver Cadillac told police he'd tried to intimidate Harris and her supporters. The former Florida secretary of state became nationally known during Florida's recount in 2000.
Police say Harris and a group of campaign supporters were at a Sarasota intersection last night, when a car sped toward them and swerved away at the last minute. Witnesses gave the license plate number to police after the Cadillac took off.
Authorities say the man showed up at the police station today, complaining that Harris' group had impeded traffic. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
There's been no comment yet from Harris' campaign office. She's running for re-election.
