State senator asks AG Lynch to look into mercury spill

PAWTUCKET, R.I. A state senator is asking Attorney General Patrick Lynch to look into New England Gas's handling of the mercury incident in Pawtucket.

Police have arrested four men in connection with a mercury spill. Police say they young men stole the mercury from a shed owned by New England Gas. The company didn't tell the Pawtucket Fire Department it was storing mercury there.

State Senator John Tassoni wrote a letter to the attorney general asking that his office looking into how the company stored the mercury and how it handled the reporting of the theft.

Tassoni says the company failed to take commonsense precautions. And, he says the company has let its number of employees go down and those who remain use out of date equipment.
