Catholic group says Bush wouldn't respond to bishops' questionnaire
UNDATED A Catholic voter advocacy group says the Bush-Cheney campaign refused to fill out a questionnaire developed for the presidential candidates by U-S Roman Catholic bishops. The Catholic Voting Project -- a group formed to counter what it sees as a narrow focus on abortion -- says it obtained a memo sent from the bishop's Office of Government Liaison to Democrat John Kerry. The memo said the Kerry campaign wouldn't need to submit answers because "the Bush campaign has indicated that it does not intend to respond to the questionnaire."
But a spokesman for the bishops' conference says it would be wrong to blame one candidate for the project's collapse, since both failed to submit responses by an August second deadline.
The questionnaire asked the candidates about their positions on issues including abortion, health care and immigration.
