More residents evacuated from complex where mercury spilled
PAWTUCKET, R.I. Residents have been evacuated from three more buildings at an apartment complex where mercury was spilled. Environmental officials also tested neighborhood schools yesterday, due to concerns children could have inadvertently tracked the toxic metal in on their shoes.
Sixty-six people have been sent to the hospital for blood tests, to determine if they were affected by the mercury.
Police have arrested four men in connection with the spill. They say the young men stole the mercury from a shed owned by New England Gas Company.
The men spilled some on the gas company's property, and more at the apartment complex. They were playing with the substance, which forms silvery beads in its liquid form.
