New lava dome at Mount St. Helens
SEATTLE Molten rock rising inside Mount St. Helens has pushed its way to the surface. A new lava dome has formed behind the existing one in the volcano's crater. But it's nothing like the dramatic rivers of red-hot lava often seen at volcanos in Hawaii. The new rock at Mount St. Helens is difficult to see from outside the crater.
A lazy plume of steam rose slowly the mountain for much of Tuesday.
The mountain had been shaking since September 23rd. And experts say an explosive eruption is still possible. The area immediately around the mountain remains off-limits.
