Fire destroys vintage planes at historic Michigan airport museum
VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. Fire has destroyed a Michigan aviation museum hangar and all the vintage aircraft inside. No word on what caused last night's fire at the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run Airport in Van Buren Township, 25 miles west of Detroit.
Several historic planes that were parked outside the hangar were unscathed.
The Yankee Air Museum includes functioning historic aircraft, fixed displays and historic artifacts, according to its Web site.
Its centerpiece was the 1941 hangar that burned last night. It was part of a plant built by Henry Ford to produce World War Two bombers on assembly lines like those used at his automotive factories.
