Karzai says election was a victory for whole nation
LONDON The interim president of Afghanistan says his country's presidential election was "a massive day of success" for the nation. Hamid Karzai (HAH'-mihd KAHR'-zeye) tells B-B-C T-V he'll be "very happy" if he wins, but says it's still "a victory for the Afghan people" even if he loses.
Karzai says the controversy over the vote's legitimacy can't ruin that.
All 15 of his challengers withdrew in the middle of voting, claiming fraud over faulty ink used to mark voters' thumbs.
A joint U-N-Afghan panel overseeing the election says it'll rule later on the vote's legitimacy.
Karzai says the boycott isn't "a serious issue," noting that some of the candidates today rejected the boycott.
