Protesters accuse Haitian leaders of failing flood victims
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti Protesters crowded outside a Mass for flood victims in Haiti today, accusing the interim president and prime minister of not doing enough to help survivors. Argentine peacekeepers guarded a cathedral in the northwestern city of Gonaives (goh-nah-EEV') from more than 100 protesters.
Beating on buckets and waving tree boughs, protesters snaked through the crowd chanting, "We are not afraid." An estimated 200-thousand people are homeless in the city where Tropical Storm Jeanne struck three weeks ago.
The protest in Gonaives came as U-N peacekeepers and supporters of ex-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide (zhahn behr-TRAHN' ahr-ihs-TEED') clashed in the capital.
A peacekeeper was injured for the first time in the force's four-month-old mission.
