Federal government awards heating assistance money
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The federal government is giving Rhode Island more than nine million dollars to help low-income families with heating costs. The money comes from the Department of Health and Human Services as part of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
The funding is roughly twice what was awarded to the state last October. But Senator Jack Reed says it's still far less than what Rhode Island needs in light of rising energy costs. He says the federal government should release 600 (m) million dollars in emergency heating funds. Those funds are focused on state's with greater levels of need.
