Sony New HD Camera
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

TOKYO Sony is previewing a new camcorder that takes video in digital high-definition quality for consumers.

The four pound (HDR-FX1) device is set to go one sale next month in Japan and around the world by the end of the year. It carries a pricetag of about 36-hundred dollars.

It can play current digital video cassette tapes for format compatibility with older models. Sony will also start selling a video cassette that's best suited for high-definition digital recordings.

Sony plans to ship five-thousand such camcorders a month in Japan. It did not give a sales target for other nations.

A Sony vice president, speaking with reporters in Tokyo, said a cheaper model would likely follow, but didn't say when.
