Former PC basketball player charged in identity theft scam

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A former Providence basketball player has been charged with taking part in a wide-ranging identity theft and embezzlement scam.

The indictment unsealed today says Marcus Douthit allegedly participated in a phony accident as part of the scheme to obtain money from insurance companies. The allegedly staged accidents were slip-and-fall incidents or car crashes.

The spokesman for state Attorney General Patrick Lynch says prosecutors are trying to track down Douthit through his professional agent, so they can arrest and arraign him.

Douthit was drafted in the second round this summer by the Los Angeles Lakers. He reportedly was on the verge of signing a contract with the team.

A message left with a Providence athletic spokesman was not immediately returned.

Six others have been charged in the alleged scheme.
