Blue Cross & Blue Shield of R.I.
R.I. Department of Health

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and the Department of Health are collaborating on a new program being offered to people throughout the Ocean State. The free foot screening program began this week. People with diabetes can come and have their feet checked by a diabetes expert and also get some tips on proper foot care. Many diabetics can have serious nerve problems with their feet, which can in some cases lead to amputation if it's not properly monitored.

Diabetes expert and registered nurse Bobette Chase says, "Some of the physical warning signs can be tingling, burning, numbness, loss of hair on the legs and shiny, taut skin."

Blue Cross & Blue Shield spokeswoman Megg Regner says, "If we can get out there and educate people on the front end about their disease and do these screenings people have a better change of managing their diabetes."

To find out more about these screenings and how to get a free foot care package you can call the Department of Health at 222-3442.

Program Description

If you have diabetes, you may have problems with your feet. Diabetes can cause a loss of feeling in the feet, which also makes it difficult to detect and treat a blister or sore before it becomes a problem. This month, we'll be holding foot screenings for people with diabetes, and explaining the basics of proper foot care. People with diabetes should inspect their feet every day, and see their doctor for regular foot care.
