Newport council approves ban on pub crawls
NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Newport City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved an ordinance banning pub crawls.
The proposal follows the death of a 21-year-old college student in a bus accident outside a Newport bar in May.
The General Assembly passed a statewide ban on pub crawls but left enforcement to local communities.
The council must approve the ordinance a second time before it takes effect. There was no opposition at Wednesday's hearing.
Businesses with liquor licenses who violate the ordinance would face fines of up to $1,000 and 30 days in jail, said Jeanne-Marie Napolitano, a council member who proposed the ordinance.
