U-S-S Reagan heads home to a welcoming ceremony
ABOARD THE USS RONALD REAGAN The nuclear aircraft carrier U-S-S "Ronald Reagan" is steaming to its home port of San Diego with one of the late president's sons aboard. More than ten-thousand people are expected to welcome the ship into port today.
Former first lady Nancy Reagan will travel by helicopter to the carrier, where she'll join Reagan's son Michael shortly before the ship arrives. Michael Reagan was flown to the carrier yesterday along with several other celebrities and members of the news media.
Nancy Reagan christened the partially completed carrier in 2001, and was also on hand when it was commissioned in Norfolk, Virginia, last year.
The U-S-S Reagan towers 20 stories above the waterline and is almost as long as the Empire State Building is tall. Its flight deck also has an area of more than four acres.
