Comprehensive Cancer Center

Walk through the halls and you're greeted by bright and warm colors, beautiful paintings and an open atmosphere. This is the new Comprehensive Cancer Center at Rhode Island Hospital.  A far cry from the small, cramped space that was the George Clinic.

The Cancer Care Center's clinical manager Elizabeth Hyde says, "In the old facility you had to go to a different place for everything.  Here it's one stop shopping."

On the center's two floors, patients have access to a team of experts, including internet access and social workers. The center has its own pharmacy and private rooms for its patients. All of this is to help make the patient feel more at ease.

R.I. Hospital oncologist Dr. Neal Ready says, "A lot of the difficulty of being diagnosed with a cancer has a lot to do with the unknown and fear of the unkown.  Having a place like this can be very helpful."

It will also be the home to several top cancer research studies. Leukemia patient Henry Thibault says he's pleased with the changes, but finds the care he receives here has always been top notch, "I live in Fall River.  We have hospitals there but I prefer to come here."

This year alone, 5,800 Rhode Islanders will be diagnosed with some form of cancer, which means unfortunately, a place like this, is becoming even more necessary.
