Gunmen attack police station in Najaf
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

Najaf, Iraq-AP -- There's fighting today in the holy Iraqi city of Najaf (NAH'-jahf) for the first time since an agreement last week to stop the bloody clashes.

Hospital officials say four Iraqis died, and 13 were injured, as Shiite militiamen and Iraqi authorities fought for control of a police headquarters.

Police and witnesses say gunmen loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr (mook-TAH'-duh ehl SAH'-dur) attacked the station after police tried to arrest suspected thieves.

Masked attackers responded with machine-gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

American troops were not involved.
