Laffey seeks second term as Cranston mayor
(Cranston-AP) -- Cranston's Republican mayor is running for a second term. Stephen Laffey made the announcement last night before a crowd of more than 300 supporters. The mayor outlined memorable events of his two years in office, including disputes with the school department and the city's crossing guards, and with the police and firefighters unions over benefits. He says many improvements have been made, but that there is still much to be done for Cranston to reach its potential. Governor Carcieri was on hand to support the mayor. In 2002, Laffey won his first term as mayor by beating Democrat Aram Garabedian with roughly 52 percent of the vote. Currently, no other Republicans have emerged to challenge Laffey in a primary.
