FOLIO Award Winners Announced
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

WOODBURY, N.Y., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Following a keynote address by CBS News' Dan Rather, the Long Island Coalition for Fair Broadcasting announced the winners of its 2004 FOLIO Awards on April 23 at the Crest Hollow Country Club at a ceremony attended by more than 800 business, community and media leaders.

NBC 4 and News 12 Long Island tied for first place, each snagging three of the custom-made crystal statuettes. In a surprise upset, upstart Long Island Press beat out all other print media in both of the FOLIO Awards' newspaper categories. Long Island East End's LTV Productions took home its first FOLIO, while "Best of the Best," the highest award bestowed by the Coalition, went to UPN 9 for a 35-minute investigative report that revealed racial profiling in Nassau County and launched a police investigation.

"This is a defining year for the FOLIO Awards," said Jaci Clement, executive director of the Long Island Coalition for Fair Broadcasting. "We saw a record number of entries, from more media outlets than ever before. At the same time, the judging panels decided to raise the bar and send the message that only the highest quality news stories deserve a FOLIO. The media outlets walking out of here with a statuette should be extremely proud of themselves."

Co-hosting the awards ceremony was ABC 7's Lori Stokes and Bill Ritter. Award presenters included WB 11's Kaity Tong and Jim Watkins, UPN 9's Harry Martin and Brenda Blackmon, FOX 5's Len Cannon and Rosanna Scotto, NBC 4's David Ushery and Ida Siegal, Telemundo's Jorge Ramos and Natalia Cruz, CBS 2's Shon Gables and Mario Bosquez, Newsday's Ed Lowe and Monsignor Thomas Hartman and Rabbi Marc Gellman, who are best known as The God Squad.

For more than two decades, the Coalition has honored media with FOLIO Awards as a way to encourage quality news reporting of local issues. For more information, log on to http://www.li-mediawatch.org/.
