( Redmond, Washington-AP) -- The latest version of Microsofts Office software for Apple computers will hit stores the third week of May.

Microsoft product manager Jessica Sommer says the company is scheduled to send the latest version of Office 2004 for Macs to manufacturers on April 14th. She says that paves the way for the product to get to store shelves the following month.

Retailers, including Apples online store and Internet retailer Amazon-dot-com, will begin offering the software for pre-order today.

The new software will cost the same as the previous version.  Office for Macs currently sells for anywhere between 149 dollars for educators to 499 dollars for the full professional version.

In June, Microsoft announced that it would stop developing its Internet Explorer Web browser for the Macintosh, citing Apples ability to create a faster and more seamless browser. Apple offers the Safari browser for the Mac platform.
