For first time, Harvard admits more women than men as undergraduates
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

Cambridge, Massachusetts-AP -- This fall's freshman class at Harvard University could have three more women than men.

One-thousand-16 women -- and one-thousand-13 men have been admitted, marking the first time in the school's history that the number of women admitted has surpassed the number of men.

The dean of admissions says the ratio of men to women was four-to-one when he arrived at Harvard in the 1960's.

In releasing the new figures today, he said, "This is a day we have been hoping for a very, very long time."

The school has also admitted its largest-ever percentage of Asian-Americans, blacks and Latinos for the fall semester.

Acceptance letters went out today.
