Senate Judiciary considered proposals that would change some sections election laws

(Providence-AP) -- The Senate Judiciary considered several proposals that would change some sections of Rhode Islands election law.

The committee approved the use of credit cards to make online donations to state and local candidates.

Credit cards already are used to make online donations to national candidates.

The committee also set a statewide standard for counting votes.

Committee members said any mark between the head and tail of the broken arrow on a ballot should be read as a vote by the optical scan voting machine.

Also, when an error is made while casting a ballot, a voter would be given a second chance to surrender that ballot and submit a corrected one.

The approved measures now go to the full Senate.
