Crowd Rallies at Statehouse Against Proposed Education Cuts
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

(Providence-AP) -- More than 300 Providence parents, teachers and students rallied outside the Statehouse yesterday to protest the governor's budget plans.

They say the proposed cuts could eliminate art, music, foreign language and extracurricular programs and would threaten education in the city.

One middle-schooler who spoke at the rally says students might be more likely to drop out if electives are eliminated. Governor Don Carcieri's budget includes a proposed eight (m) million dollar cut in school aid.

If the governor cuts three (m) million dollar from the Providence school budget, the district would face a 17 (m) million dollar shortfall.

The governor has said the public schools have plenty of money but have to learn to spend it more wisely.
