Dressing for Disaster

 Every mom wants to look her best as she stands by her son's side on his wedding day. Nancy Rossi ordered her dress from an East Providence bridal shop more than six months before the big day. But despite her planning ahead, she says her dress disaster nearly kept her from getting to the church on time.

 Nancy Rossi tells us for the bride and groom it was like a wedding you see on television...picture perfect the bride was stunning, her new husband handsome as ever...but the mother of the groom...

"I was uncomfortable all day."

Uncomfortable and unkempt in her dress.


 "It was 3 inches too long."

A skirt three inches too long, a hem that's visibly uneven, breast pads cut in half and used in place of shoulder pads, uneven straps not even sewn into the lining, and that's not the worst of it.


 "The jacket looked like something a ten-year-old just starting out taking sewing lessons would do."

Nancy ordered this two-piece gown from a local bridal shop back in April


 "It seemed to be perfect for the day, it would blend in with the wedding party and, it was something that looked well on. It just needed a few alterations."

Along with a jacket that needed to be made. But when Nancy was ready for a fitting, the bridal shop wasn't.


"It's still very early and we have a lot of weddings, call us in July."

 Nancy couldn't get in for her first fitting until the end of august, and her second fitting...even later.


"Well finally it wound up being October 2nd."

Just eight days before the wedding.   Nancy says her alterations weren't even started. Four days to go and the jacket she requested...a mess.


"She had used the material that the jacket was made out of for the lining - which was too heavy for lining fabric. And she had used a different type of lining for the sleeves."

 Nancy says when she refused to pay for the alterations the bridal shop refused to let her leave the store until she paid up.


 "She said...if you don't pay for the jacket, you're not going to get the dress."

Nancy did end up taking the jacket and paying for it, but had to have it re-done by an independent seamstress the day before the wedding.  When Call for Action contacted the bridal shop they told us the alterations were perfectly acceptable and they say Nancy never complained as she did to us but, they did agree to re-do anything she wasn't happy with, so she can wear the dress again, free of charge.
