Police chief, NAACP member see suspect's death in different ways
Cincinnati-AP -- Cincinnati Police Chief Thomas Streicher (STRY'-kur) says it appears his officers followed proper procedures, even though a suspect died in custody. Streicher says it's too early to make a final judgment about the incident.
Calvert Smith of the Cincinnati N-double-A-C-P has a different take on Sunday's death of suspect Nathaniel Jones -- a black man who weighed 350 pounds.
Smith says something's wrong if people are dying during or after police encounters.
A videotape taken from a squad car shows officers striking Jones with their batons during the arrest. Streicher says it's obvious one of the officers was assaulted while he was trying to calm down Jones.
Preliminary autopsy results show Jones had an enlarged heart, and his blood contained cocaine and P-C-P.
Streicher and Smith appeared on the morning talk shows.
