With steel decision pending, Bush stumps in Pittsburgh
White House-AP -- President Bush is stumping in Pittsburgh today -- as a big decision looms on whether to roll back steel tariffs. The president imposed the tariffs last year to help the industry stave off foreign competition long enough to restructure. But the World Trade Organization has ruled them illegal -- and America's trading partners are vowing retaliation unless Bush relents.
Top White House advisers are reportedly recommending he do so. However, officials say an announcement is unlikely until after a fund-raiser today hosted by Thomas Usher, the C-E-O of U-S Steel.
Meantime, before leaving the White House for Pittsburgh, Bush is signing a bill extending a program giving bonuses to states which boost the number of adoptions from foster care.
