(Providence-AP) -- The shopping season was officially kicked off this weekend but now police are warning mall-goers to watch their pocketbooks.

Security has been beefed up at area malls to protect shoppers and their packages.

They say if you're going to leave some purchases in the car, make sure to stick them in the trunk or cover them.

They also suggest keeping an eye on your bags while searching for other items.

Shoppers hit the malls in force this weekend to take advantage of retailers' sales.

No must-have item has emerged this season so far.

Although the best sellers in toys include Fisher-Price's Hokey Pokey Elmo, Spin Master's Mighty Beanz collectible plastic toys, M-G-A Entertainment's Bratz dolls and Mattel's Hot Wheels T-Wrecks playset.
