Israel, Palestinians continue peace moves
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

Jerusalem-AP -- Israel and the Palestinians are pushing ahead with efforts to arrange a summit between their leaders, while a U-S envoy tries to revive long-stalled peace talks.

Senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat (sah-EEB' EHR'-ih-kaht) is scheduled to meet with Dov Weisglass (duhv WYS'-glas), the chief of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's office. The two hope to lay the groundwork for a meeting between Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia (AHK'-mehd kuh-RAY'-uh).

Qureia has thretened to decline a meeting if Israel does not halt construction of a West Bank security barrier. Israel says the barrier is necessary to block Palestinian suicide bombers.

Meanwhile, U-S envoy William Burns is scheduled to meet with Sharon and Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom. He met with Qureia yesterday in Amman, Jordan.
