Federal judge rejects Latin Kings' pleas
(Providence-AP) -- A federal judge has rejected the efforts of two members of the Latin Kings street gang to have their prison sentences reduced.
Judge Mary Lisi rejected Giovanni Lara's second attempt to reduce the time he is serving. Lara was convicted of carjacking, with death resulting, for the 1994 murder of Temujin Vandergroen.
Lara did not shoot Vandergroen, but was sentenced to life in prison for his participation in the murder.
Lisi also rejected bid by George Sepulveda to have his sentence reduced. Sepulveda was the head of the Providence chapter of the Latin Kings.
He was convicted in 1997 of racketeering and other charges in connection with the murder of a rival gang's leader.
Sepulveda is also serving a life sentence. The judge said both appeals for reduced sentences lacked legal merit.
