Hunters asked to help monitor deer
(Providence-AP) -- The state is asking hunters to help monitor deer for signs of a progressive neurological disease.
Chronic Wasting Disease affects nervous systems in animals and is always fatal to deer and elk.
ItÔŅĹs been found in wild deer and elk in several states, but not
Rhode Island.
The Department of Environmental Management has been awarded a 44-thousand dollar grant to conduct surveillance for the disease in Rhode IslandÔŅĹs white-tailed deer herd.
The state is also asking hunters to take precautions when hunting out of state to avert spreading the disease to Rhode Island deer.
