NASA reviews safety tips for shuttles
Kennedy Space Center-AP -- NASA says it is reviewing every safety suggestion -- no matter how wacky -- in an effort to get the space shuttles flying again. The space agency has been taking suggestions from its own workers as well as the public since September.
A NASA spokesman says each suggestion is reviewed, adding officials aren't "just blowing them off" -- even if a suggestion seems outrageous.
NASA today released a summary of suggestions -- ranging from shrink-wrapping the external fuel tanks to covering the shuttle wind edges with titanium.
NASA says it will cost 280 (m) million dollars just to carry out all the safety recommendations from the Columbia accident investigators. The final cost will likely climb.
So far, officials haven't figured out how to repair wing damage in orbit. That's what is blamed for the February crash of space shuttle Columbia.
