China set to begin testing experimental SARS vaccine next month
Beijing-AP -- China is set to begin human trials on an experimental SARS vaccine. Government officials say the dead virus will be injected into subjects so their immune systems might learn to recognize and attack live strains.
The head of China's Food and Drug Administration tells The Associated Press it's not clear if it will be successful in humans, but that it's effective in animals, especially monkeys.
The agency is looking for volunteers for the trials, which are scheduled to begin next month.
SARS is a flu-like disease. It first surfaced in the southern province of Guangdong last year. Some 774 people died and more than eight-thousand became ill before the virus subsided in July.
