Proposal calls for sprinklers in more nightclubs
(Chicago-AP) -- A measure advancing through the
Chicago City Council would require all new and substantially rehabbed nightclubs to be equipped with sprinkler systems.
The measure was proposed nearly two weeks after a fire at a downtown high-rise killed six people.
A Rhode Island man whose daughter was among the 100 people killed in The Station nightclub fire in February testified before the councilÔŅĹs buildings committee yesterday.
Raymond Mattera said one sprinkler above the stage where the rock group Great White was playing would have contained the deadly blaze.
Some fire safety experts have different opinions, saying sprinklers might not have had much of an impact against such a fast-moving fire.
The full council will likely vote on the proposal on November Fifth.
