Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic-AP -- A strong earthquake has shaken the Dominican Republic, rattling homes and sending tremors that were felt as far away as Puerto Rico. The magnitude six-point-five quake was centered near the coastal resort town of Puerto Plata, on the north coast.
There have been no reports of injuries, although startled tourists were awakened with a jolt. Police say one wing of the main hospital in Santiago was damaged and patients were moved out.
Residents report items falling off shelves, but no extensive damage.
The earthquake was felt as far away as western Puerto Rico, about 220 miles to the east.
