Smoke Shop Confrontation
State Police give their tape of the Narragansett Indian raid
(Providence-AP) -- The Rhode Island state police have given its tape of a raid on the Narragansett Indian smoke shop in July to a commission investigating the incident.
But it won't make that tape public. The 30-minute tape was filmed by a state police officer on the scene. It includes footage of arrests and what went on inside the smoke shop.
A police spokesman the tape wasn't made public because it's evidence in a criminal case. The spokesman says it reinforces arguments that officers met significant resistance during the raid. Police confiscated cigarettes the Narragansetts had been selling tax-free at the shop on tribal land on Route Two in Charlestown.
The state says the tribe can't sell tax-free products. The tribe says it can, because it's on federal land, and thus not subject to state taxation laws
